The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary views training in the area of Boating Safety and Seamanship as one of its Primary Missions.  The National Office of the Auxiliary Offers extensive training in Areas such as Boating Safety, Seamanship, Navigation, Sailing and the Use of a GPS to name a few.  To Check out the Boating Education section of the National Web site please click on the Auxiliary Logo above.  For information on Local Education Programs please Contact our Staff Officer Education by e-mailing her here Public Education Officer

The most common classes that are given by the flotilla in Northern Michigan are

Safe Boating ( America's Boating Class) This class gives you basic instruction of the safe operation of a boat. It can be taken on line through the National Office, or can be taken in an 8 hour classroom meeting.  If you take the on-line course and wish to get your boating safety certificate you must take a proctored exam. Auxiliary Instructors can give you this proctored exam. Successful completion of this course is considered acceptable to the State of Michigan's requirements for operation of a Personal Watercraft.

Boating Skills and Seamanship-  This class is usually an eight week ( 3 hours per week) Class which gives you more detailed information boating skills. It includes basic seamanship, the meaning and rules of the aids to navigation system,  boating handling, rules of safe boating, and an introduction to Navigation

Navigation -  This six to eight week course is a detailed learning experience on Navigation skills.  In this course you will learn to plot a course, determine your location on a nautical chart, and learn the techniques necessary to the Art of Navigation

GPS - The Use of a Global Position System- In this course you will learn how to use a GPS and how to establish and sail by use of your position on the water, how to set and use waypoints.  An how to  follow a course based on the Satellite Navigations System
